Flowers, chocolates and jewelry - the staples of any great romantic holiday. This Valentine's Day, it's in with the old as shoppers find appeal in traditional classics.
There's no denying that flowers are hot for every occasion. Mother-daughter team Dianne Graham and Courtney Roberts of Grower Direct Fresh Cut Flowers Inc., at 761 18th Street, specialize in flowers for every season and every reason. And this season, it's roses.
"Roses are probably the highest percentage of Valentine's sales," said Graham, "especially for men to give their sweethearts. And men are traditionally drawn to the red."
As well, floral arrangements are also a popular gift for him.
"As it stands, there are more ladies buying for men than there were five years ago," the floral artist said. "Women like to buy strong vibrant colours. They like the primary colours - red, yellow, orange. Gerbera daisies and lilies are popular as well."
Chanel Bags Mixed cut bouquets are preferred, as they have a nice assortment and are long lasting.
They are perfect for sweethearts, family and friends alike, Graham insists. And contemporary containers add a modern appeal.
Traditionally, each flower is known to convey its own special message. Graham insists that nowadays, symbolism is not the main focus.
Fake Clerc "The message of the flowers is in the gift itself. Years gone by, coloured roses had significance, but there's so many varieties out there that it's hard to pinpoint what a colour actually means. There are even rainbow-coloured roses now."
Often coupled with flowers is a box of chocolates. Many gift givers opt for a classy gourmet box versus a drugstore special, and it's all about variety: milk and dark chocolate, truffles, nougats, nuts, caramel and fruity centres.
Although gift demands change over the course of your relationship, one thing remains: jewelry beautifully celebrates any romantic occasion.
"Valentine's Day can be a traditional time for young men to pop the question," said Shirley Smith, a sales associate for Reesor's Jewelers in the Shoppers Mall. "Canadian white gold solitaires with Canadian diamonds are popular for engagement rings."
Great gifts for her include promise rings, earrings-such as the Diamond Fascination hoop earring-bracelets, rings with birthstones or small diamond, pendants and lockets. Popular gifts for him consist of ID bracelets, regular bracelets, chains and watches (Roots, Guess, Bulova).
Corum Replica Watches Nothing symbolizes love more completely than does the heart. Heart-shaped jewelry such as lockets, pendants or crystals - like Carly Smith's Cinnamon Hearts - are available.
Smith offers that with the rising price of gold, silver is the popular choice. And engravings, though not commonplace, can give your gift a personal touch.
The classic dinner-and- a-movie date remains a constant staple for Valentine's Day. A popular eatery includes Diggers Restaurant in the Trails West Inn, as they celebrate the holiday weekend with a special menu.
The event offers a variety of delectable appetizers and a choice of gourmet entrees: chicken cordon bleu, AAA Angus New York steak and prime rib, and baked Atlantic salmon steak. Reservations are accepted, but not necessary.
