What the 'glossies' are saying

2010年9月2日

A quick survey of the literature -- and, yes, we are counting women's fashion magazines as literature -- shows agreement on at least three trends for Fall 2007:

1. White shirts are in. Lucky magazine calls a crisp white oxford, "Fall's new take on the classics." Seventeen recommends tucking a simple white blouse into high-waist jeans. And In Style says, "White is the new black" and adds that a starched white shirt is both prim and sexy. "Think Grace Kelly or Kim Novak."

2. When it comes to shoes, anything goes and your closet is probably already full of options. Seventeen shows high-top converse, round-

toe platform heels, pointy-toe flats. Teen Vogue shows an ankle- high sneaker made of wine-pink satin. Lucky shows stiletto-heel pumps, stacked-heel pumps, as well as a chunky high-heel Mary Jane in dark blue with a maroon toe and ankle strap. In Style shows ankle boots, tall-cuffed boots, oxford platforms, high heels with rounded toes capped in a contrasting color, flats with a thick strap of elastic over the instep, and colorful satin high-heel evening sandals.

You can update your ballet flats by clipping some jewels or buckles on the toes; or just wear them the way they came, especially if they are leopard print or gold.

3. replica IWC Watches Silhouettes are soft. If you want a sleek look think subtle, not severe. Go for the WWII-era silk dresses and short-sleeve blouses. Pair last year's tough-girl biker jacket with a chiffon skirt or cuddly sweater.

Jackets are either fitted or short and boxy. Pencil skirts are made of mesh or loopy wool or other feminine fabrics. Knee-length skirts don't have to be slim, either. They can be gathered or slightly flared.

replica Hermes Handbags Teen Vogue chose a simple short-sleeve minidress as an important new silhouette. (Think a long T-shirt shape. Picture it belted or worn straight.) Lucky shows a knit cloche hat. Everybody likes long sweater vests.

This season's fashion magazines make it easy to find your own style -- from eclectic to California cool to something vintage, inspired by the 1920s, '40s or '70s.

What the deuce is Federer wear

2010年9月2日

Byline: Stephen McGinty

THE bag was a dazzling gold apparently inspired by the legacy of Liberace. The coat looked as though it had been beamed down from the USS Enterprise.

When Roger Federer stepped on to the centre court at Wimbledon and unveiled his latest outfit, in the style stakes at least it was clearly advantage Murray.

While the Swiss number two seed was delighted by the outfit designed by his sponsor, Nike, in the stands eyebrows were arched at a getup that appeared to replica Chloe Handbags be a cross between Roger Moore's old safari suit and the wardrobe from a sci-fi epic.

A man as renowned for his sartorial elegance as Murray has been for his unkempt appearance, Federer appears to have been bested by his young rival before a single point has been played.

In recent weeks, when not posing topless to display his formidable new build, Murray has been clothed in a natty new wardrobe by Fred Perry that exudes the spirit of the 1930s, when the last British player won Wimbledon, a feat the Scot this year replica Bvlgari plans to match.

Last year Federer opened with an ace when he unveiled a striking new herringbone cardigan with five buttons, one for each of his Wimbledon victories.

Yesterday, however, his outfit hit the net - a fact which did not distract the world number two from demolishing Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets.

However he defended the new look on his Facebook page, where he wrote: "I love that it's more contemporary whilst still looking clean and sophisticated."

Yesterday style guru Peter York, upon hearing about Mr Federer's new look with its military style epaulette and multiple pockets, wondered if he was a "French Swiss or German Swiss".

The more daring outfits at Wimbledon, where a strict all-white dress code is enforced, have always provoked a reaction, although it is usually the women players who draw the most attention.

In 1985 Anne White, a then unknown American, played one Replica replica chanel game in a skintight catsuit, later banned by umpires, while two years ago France's Tatiana Golovin provoked controversy by wearing red knickers.

Yesterday, Serena Williams unveiled her own curious trenchcoat-style tennis attire.

Last night Scotsman fashion writer John Davidson said Dunblane-born Murray now has the advantage over Federer.

"The first thing that Andy Murray got right this week was the functional simplicity of his Fred Perry kit," he said.

"Whereas Federer's gilt-encrusted show-off look is what I'd term 'Vegas-tly', Murray's choice is merely a dignified and perfectly functional update on classic gear from the golden age of British lawn tennis.

"Federer's innovative fashion development looks to me like a cross between the languid elegance of The Great Gatsby and the bling-encrusted stage costumes very possibly under construction for Michael Jackson's London concert dates.

"Federer's gold-edged and monogrammed safari jacket is faintly ludicrous, but the laugh-out-loud element must be the comedy waistcoat, which looks like a busboy in an American diner."

Vintage photographs make a com

2010年8月31日

It seems fashion trends are not just limited to clothes and jewellery. Even artistic photography is bringing vintage back. Tasveer and Bernard J Shapero Rare Books in association with Ganjam are presenting 'One Hundred Vintage Views of India' later this month - a touring exhibition of rare early 19th century photographs of great cities in India.

The show not only aims to display early views of our rich cultural heritage but also to show the presence of photography in India in the early 19th century as well as promote photography as an art form.

"Photography started almost simultaneously in India and the West," says Abhishek Poddar, founder of Tasveer, "but I don't believe good vintage photographs of India have been shown under one roof so far."

A Lange & Sohne Tourbograph Pour le Merite

Tasveer, an organisation that promotes, encourages and presents the art of photography and photography as art, was founded five years ago in Bangalore. While many exhibitions have been held over the years, showcasing works of various contemporary photographers and themes, this is a first for early works.

"We have been doing a lot of photography shows, the recent ones all contemporary. We thought it was time to go back to early photography," says Poddar.

Fake Wholesale Hermes Handbags Handbags

This exhibition has taken a surprisingly long time to set up, says Poddar. "We normally get photographers who would like to exhibit their works, but in this case we couldn't do that. It took us a while - about two years - to put together this collection because we had to wait for good enough images and prints to come by. These are authentic, original vintage pieces," he explains.

It took so long also because the photos were not selected at random, but the right combination of quality and content had to be found. "Tasveer never compromises on the quality of the image, the condition as well as the focus of what it is showing," says Poddar.

The photos show different parts and views of big cities in the Indian subcontinent - starting from Kashmir, down to the South.

Contrary to popular belief, the event is not limited to just photography lovers. "The audience comprises of art and Triumph Motorcycle Watches photography lovers, as well as students, academicians and others interested in culture - and in this particular case also people who like antiques, and other vintage paraphernalia," says Poddar.

Tasveer has associated with Ganjam, their lead sponsors, for this event due to Ganjam's artistic stance. Leading jewellers in India for the past two centuries, Ganjam has always encouraged and promoted art in any form and thus believe this partnership reiterates their brand proposition.

The exhibition will be held in Ganjam Mantapa, Bangalore from August 9 to 28 before moving on to Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai

Salary cap will hit grassroots

2010年8月4日

IT SEEMS inevitable the reduced national provincial championship salary cap will result in hitting grassroots rugby clubs in the pocket in coming years.

In an attempt to help the cash- strapped provincial unions the NZRU has wisely opted to reduce the salary cap.

But while you'll find this is a great move for the provinces it is likely to be the clubs in certain circumstances that will be asked to pick up the slack.

With 14 teams still in the premier provincial competition the battle to attract and retain players is intense.

Yet the reduced salary cap means the ability to throw money at these players is now limited.

This is where I believe the clubs will come into play and, from what sources have advised me, it is already happening in Southland.

Fake Christian Dior Watches

Unions will sign promising academy players or fringe NPC Fake Glashutte players into the province on a contract closer to the minimal $15,000 retainer than at the higher end of the scale.

The unions will then put those players up on a pedestal for all the clubs to battle over in a bidding process.

This "bidding" results in clubs providing rent, maybe a car or maybe just a cash handout to the player coming into the province.

That player's move to Southland quickly becomes much more financially attractive than their Rugby Southland contract alone.

Some clubs may be happy with this possible concept.

It seems Rugby Southland is comfortable with it for the obvious benefits it can get out of it.

But as time wears on those who run their club by asking for annual subs and not offering handouts will struggle.

My opinion on this matter has already been well documented in past seasons but as another year rolls around the sledgehammer that is professional rugby has just taken an even harder swing at grassroots rugby as the bidding war for players intensifies.

I was brought up in a family that lived and breathed a club rugby scene that was based on led tubes camaraderie and passion for clubs.

Some, I'm sure, will be frustrated with me raising the topic again, saying handouts to certain players is just the way of club rugby these days.

But the fact is, in my eyes at least, club rugby has lost much of the sparkle it once had and will continue to if Rugby Southland's contracted players bounce themsleves around clubs in an attempt to find the best price.

I'VE had a debate with a mate of mine and for interest's sake I'm asking you to help solve this by emailing your answer to the following question:

In the month of March would you prefer to watch Super 14 rugby or international cricket?
