Boston Celtics jerseysSpeaking to DNA, Dharia who presently runs Vanrai, a social organisation working in the environment sector, said Indians consider the 1857 mutiny as the year when the country's freedom struggle started.
"In reality the freedom struggle started as early as in 1826, when there was a rebellion by the Assamese subjects against the East India Company. My book covers the freedom struggle spanning 1826 to 1947. The book also dwells upon the post-Independence era of the country till 2009," Dharia said.
Speaking about what inspired him to write a book on history of the freedom struggle and post-Independence era, he said, "Whenever I get a chance to interact with the younger generation, I feel that they do not dunk high know much about our freedom struggle. Therefore, I thought of making them aware of the freedom struggle and the martyrdom of lakhs of fellow Indians."
According to him, the book is meant for students, educated people as well as for the common people.
Dharia said being a freedom fighter he is often restless about the happenings in the country, the ignorance of the people, the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle and the progress made by the country after 1947 despite several odds.
Dharia, who was also known as a "young Turk" in the Indira Gandhi government, said, "The post-Independence era contains the Emergency period, and most of the five-year plans of the nation. The book is not a comprehensive volume, but a guide to know India since its inception till today."
