Bank heists a loser's game

Bank robbery is on the rise, and is no longer the province of the smarter kind of crook. Now he or she is likely to be young, stupid - and desperate. David Gadd reports.

--------------------

YOUNG, stupid and high on drugs or booze, an increasing number of desperate men have been holding up banks.

There were 87 bank robberies last year, more than any other year on record. It is a 47 per cent jump on 2008 and 21 per cent above the previous record year, 1992.

There was also a growing spread of bank heists outside Auckland. Waikato saw the largest increase, with crime figures also up in Wellington and Christchurch. More banks were hit in winter months.

However, the rise in bank jobs bucks a wider trend for robberies. Latest police statistics, for the year to June 2009, showed 2487 total robberies, 133 fewer than the previous year.

The character of the bank robber has changed. The bank heist used to be the preserve of the "professional" criminal, but this is no longer the case, Canterbury University criminologist Greg Newbold says.

"In the past, professional bank robbers were able to get away with a lot of money and they had a high chance of escape. That has changed now because there is not so much cash available in banks and the security systems are far better."

Most career criminals had abandoned risky bank robbery and were dealing in P, which was more lucrative and safer.

This left "young, inexperienced, opportunistic thrill seekers", Dr Newbold said.

"Really young nobodies going nowhere are the postcard printing bank robber of today. Most of these people are driven by adrenaline, testosterone and alcohol."

Underscoring a lack of intelligence in the new-breed bank robber are the high rates of arrest.

Detective Superintendent Win van der Velde, the national manager of criminal investigations, said the police rate for catching crooks for all robberies was 46 per cent in the past year. In comparison, 60 per cent of bank robberies were solved - with many culprits caught within hours.

Given the risks, it was "staggering" that people continued to rob banks. "They are committing an offence that carries Replica prada wholesale a 14-year prison term with a high likelihood that they are going to be apprehended."

The spike in bank robberies led Mr van der Velde's team to carry out a study to determine what was driving it. The mistaken allure of quick cash and the belief they could make a quick getaway were the drawcards.

Bank robbers caught in 2008 and 2009 gave reasons of "needing to pay outstanding debts, service an alcohol dependency, having no money to put food on the table, and even wanting to go back to prison", Mr van der Velde said.

The recession also contributed. The last peak year for bank raids also coincided with a recession in the 1990s. Dr Newbold agreed: "Recession definitely adds to people's sense of desperation and their readiness to take desperate measures. It adds to their recklessness when they need quick cash."

Auckland University criminologist William Wood said the prospect of solving money problems made the risk seem worthwhile. "Often bank robbers are repeat offenders who may have a cluster of problems - addictions, abuse, debts (particularly illegitimate ones), housing problems - that mak

BANG TO RIGHTS; These six drug

Byline: GARETH LIGHTFOOT

SIX men who peddled an "ever-ready" stock of drugs across the road from a primary school are behind bars today for more than 30 years.

More than a century's worth of prison sentences have now been passed on dealers following Operation Stockholm.

A dramatic scene unfolded with gasps and tears as the two leaders of a drugs pandora beads network were locked up last night.

Simon Bennett and Graham Lindo were each jailed for seven years for being "at the heart of this conspiracy".

Lindo, 21, of Dover Street, Stockton, angrily shouted across the courtroom "Eh? You having a f***ing laugh? Is he off his head?", then kicked the door as he left the dock.

He and Bennett, 23, organised the network, controlled its two mobile phones, took orders, sent dealers out and made sales.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the gang openly traded in heroin and crack cocaine, sometimes in front of children, in Oxbridge, Stockton.

The base where they stacked drugs and wads of cash was the home of husband and wife Karl and Helen Jones on Suffolk Street. Prosecutor Harry Hadfield said the drugs ring responded to demand for heroin and crack cocaine. He told how drugs were delivered to customers within minutes of orders being placed by phone. The Crown Prosecution Service Cleveland advocate said: "A large number of these transactions have occurred within very close proximity to Oxbridge Primary School." He described a series of supplies revealed by the police investigation last April and May - many at the Oxbridge shops and a tunnel at Dovecot Street, and some while schoolchildren passed. The judge, Recorder William Lowe QC, said: "These drugs are a scourge and there must be significant sentences of custody. "It's quite clear that this was a commercial operation. It involved dealing in heroin and crack cocaine on a significant scale within Stockton." Police raided the Suffolk Street home and found crack cocaine and pounds 1,810 cash on May 15. When they searched Bennett's home on Water Avens Way, Stockton, five days later, they found pounds 2,865 cash. Andrew Allcock, of Twelfth Street, Peterlee, was jailed for six-and-a-half years; Francis Moir, 21, of Douglas Walk, Stockton, for postcard printing four years. Both dealt and wrapped drugs. The judge condemned Allcock's "despicable act" of sending his son Daniel, 18, to collect a drugs package. Karl Jones was jailed for five years as the judge said he was "

significantly involved" in the merchandise preparation. Bennett's brother Christopher, 19, of Chadderton Drive, Thornaby, acted as lookout. He was sent to a young offenders' institution for two years. All eight defendants admitted conspiring to supply heroin. All except Christopher Bennett and Daniel Allcock admitted conspiring to supply cocaine. Lindo got involved in the drugs ring while unemployed shortly after release from a six-year sentence for a vicious knife attack and robbery. Andrew Allcock also admitted separate offences of possessing 19.6g of heroin with intent to supply and stealing and torching his sister's car. Defence advocates talked of the conspirators' family tragedies, drug habits and debt, vulnerability, being recruited and used as "expendable soldiers" by higher dealers, remorse, lack of profit and positive changes to their lives. Many of the dealers were locked up for the first time. Only two kept their freedom. Helen Jones' former home was "taken over" by her husband's "so-called friends" and she played no active part, it was said. The couple now live in County Durham. She was given a 50-week prison senten
