U.S. ski coach returns to Utah

WHISTLER, British Columbia -- The men's head coach for the U.S. Ski Team has left the Olympics and gone home to Utah for the birth of his second child.

U.S. Ski Team spokesman Doug Haney says coach Sasha Rearick departed after the last U.S. competitor raced in the men's giant slalom Tuesday.

Haney says Rearick will try to get back to Whistler in time for Saturday's slalom, the last men's alpine event.

Nagasu skates with bloody nose

After his mishap in Saturday's pursuit, the triple world champion and World Cup leader was so angry that he refused to speak to reporters after the race -- leading to a storm of criticism and complaints back home.

Now he's smiling again.

"It was great what I did last year (at the worlds), but maybe even bigger today to become Olympic champion," he said. "With the start I had in these championships, maybe it feels even better now to reach my goal."

The freestyle event features a two-man relay, where each skier takes turns going three laps around a 1.6-kilometer course. The Norwegians finished in 19 minutes, 1 second to beat the German duo of Teichmann and Tim Tscharnke by 1.3 seconds. The Russian team of Nikolay Morilov and Alexey Petukhov was 1.5 seconds back in third.

Northug had to do the heavy lifting for Norway throughout the race as his partner Oeystein Pettersen struggled to keep up with his rivals. Pettersen only made the team after sprint specialist Ola Vigen Hattestad pulled out with a sore throat and couldn't match Tscharnke's pace on the fifth lap.

Women cross country

For a couple of veterans who supposedly are past their prime, Claudia Nystad and Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle sure have a lot of spring in their step.

THE top four sides will be battling it out to host semifinals when the final round of Soffe Cup interclub tennis is played this weekend.

Sandford's Manaia has taken a one- point lead over AWE Huatoki at the top of the table after Saturday's tie, while Hareb Deken Oakura has also signalled its intentions, closing to within seven and eight points of the two leading clubs.

AWE Huatoki and Tariki Icon Sports Pukekura played out an 8-8 draw at the Huatoki courts on Saturday. The score reflected an even contest throughout the day, with neither side quite able to seize the decisive advantage.

The singles were shared 2-2 in the men's and women's sections.

Huatoki's Amrit Rai overcame the challenge of Callum Old in the top men's match 5-7, 6-0, 7-6 (10-8), while Zach Wills announced his brief return to Soffe Cup with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Quinn Rosa.

In the women's singles, Sue Oldfield and Louise Brankin were comprehensive in their wins for Oakura, while Michelle Lace won well over Becky Bruckner 6-1, 6-3 and Melissa Wong won 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 over Shae Martin.

Leader Manaia was in top form, beating Central Finance Rotokare 11-5 in New Plymouth. Manaia streaked ahead in the singles 6-2 after it won all four men's matches.

Jordan Fleming outgunned Blair Crowley in the No 1 men's match 6- 1, 6-1, while Jason Mills, Michael Gates and Grant Gopperth were all in great touch winning their matches in straight sets.

In the women's singles, Manaia's Maree Gopperth scored a very good win over Beccie Atkins 6-2, 6-3 in the No 2 match.

GARY Butler was drunk, violent and stupid when he slashed two housemates with a knife.

Butler, 32, was arguing with them over their accommodation arrangements.

He had 10 previous convictions for assault offences, including two while armed.

The knife attack happened on January 21 last year at English Street when Butler's two housemates came home about 5pm after drinking at a hotel for about two hours.

An argument started and Butler told them: "I'm going to stab you. I'm going to kill you," Crown prosecutor Scott Thackeray told the Mackay District Court yesterday.

The two men locked themselves in a room. After a short time they came out and Butler was holding a knife.

He swung it at the 20-year-old man, who put his hand up to protect himself and suffered a wound to his right wrist.

Butler then went for the second man, aged 19, and he also put up his hands to cover himself and suffered a cut wrist and forearm.

One of the victims went to find a phone to call police but Butler caught him and threw him into a window, shattering it.

Butler left the home but was detained by police a short distance away.

Barrister Paddy Cullinane said the fight broke out because one of the men had moved in and had invited the other man to move in without telling Butler.

"This was an act of someone who was grossly frustrated," Mr Cullinane said.

One victim required seven stitches to his knife wound.

The other suffered a five-centimetre laceration to his forearm, which also damaged muscles and tendons. He required surgery and spent three days in hospital.

Butler pleaded guilty to two charges of unlawful wounding.

Judge Julie Dick, SC, said it was clear that Butler was "drunk and stupid" and that he had a violent past.

Butler was jailed for three years.

However, he had already served 393 days in custody, almost 13 months since the day he was arrested, so he was released on parole immediately.

On release from the watch-house he said he was relieved to be out of jail.

"It's good to be out," he said.

"And please thank the lawyer (Paddy Cullinane) for getting me out on parole immediately," he said.

I miss the future that we were supposed to have.
